This past semester in college I took a class that spent a lot of time discussing Supreme Court cases and arguing the constitutionality of the arguments and rulings. Another topic we covered was the concept of "Just Warfare." When is a country justified in going to war?
My comments led to the suggestions by a classmate that I be an arms dealer. I must admit, I have never been recommended to that occupation, but here are some of my speaking points.
One of our discussion prompts was: "Is the use of Predator drones in warfare a good idea?" My thoughts:
- For America, American lives must always be more valuable than another country's lives--it's a principle of survival. We cannot send our citizens into unnecesarry danger when safer alternative exist.
Classmate rebuttal: Predator drones remove the human aspect from warfare--you no longer understand the actual consequences of your violence. What is to stop us from staring a lot of wars?
My rebuttal: If we can run a risk-free war with 100% probability for success, and are doing it for the right reaons (a whole other discussion), where is the problem? We would be promoting democracy, and you, the class, seem to agree that democracy is the best form of government for everyone (a point which I disagree on), so again, where's problem with going to war?
I was then told I ought to be an arms dealer. It was amusing.
What are your thoughts on warfare? Where do you take issue with my speaking points? I'll happily respond to any comments you leave for me!

War is such an integrated part of the human experience that I think we all need to figure out a way of alienating our selves from the subject; in order to view it in a way where we aren't so emotionally involved, where we aren't thinking about our fathers and brothers fighting in them and dieing in them...
ReplyDeletePersonally, I hate war. I hate it with a passion, and I tend to really dislike people who seem to love it but I understand that that feeling comes from an emotional place within me which means that it is irrational and shouldn't be considered.
